Learning Goal:  Understand the use of imagery, figurative language, and symbolism in fiction.
1.        Identify a literary device used in the novel.  Copy the line and page number.
2.       Explain how the device helped to make meaning clear.
3.       What effect did the device have on the mood, tone, or message?
Refer to pages 538-539 of the blue Holt Elements of Literature textbook for detailed descriptions of literary devices.  The main literary devices include imagery, figurative language, and symbolism. According to our textbook they can be defined as:
Imagery is language that creates pictures.  Imagery can reach our other senses.  It can help us not only to see something but also to smell or taste it, hear it, and feel its texture and temperature. (Example: “The first stroke of the young violinist’s bow produced a piercing whine, so unintended that the artist’s eyes rolled in sympathy with his audience.” )
Figurative language includes similes, metaphors, and personification.
In a simile, a writer compares two unlike things using the words ‘like’ or ‘as’ or ‘than’ or ‘resembles.’
(Example:  “The sea was as smooth as glass.” )
In a metaphor a writer compares two things directly, without using the words like, as, than, or resembles.  (Example:  “The sea was a sheet of glass.”)
In personification something nonhuman is given human characteristics.  (Example:  “The sea sang a song of peace.”)
In literature a symbol is a person, place, or thing that stands for itself and for something beyond itself as well. For example, a red rose might stand for or symbolize love.

  2. I found two literary devices, one is when Lily exclaimed that the visitors where acting like animals. Another is that Lily says that the new baby boy has eyes as pale as Jonas's.

  4. "I don't know. They acted like... like..."
    "Amimals?" Jonas suggested. He laughed.
"That's right, like animals." Lily said laughing too.

This is symbolism becuase animal is representing a boy who was acting crazy, wild, and cutting people in line for the slide. He is not really an animal.

  5. When Lily called a boy an animal that was a type of symbolism because, the boy wasn't really an animal he just acted like an animal. He was a mean boy who cut the line to go on a slide.

  6. Period 3 boys-- be careful. I think that Lilly saying that the visitors were like animals is a simile. A simile compares two things using like or as.

  7. We thought that a correct answer is only reached by a mind supirior of the standard intelectual process. here is our comment-when Jonas says that Gabes eyes have depth, we thought that that was personification because eyes are only about 0. 99987568675446554544588425576125654886334554 inches thick.

  10. " He entered the bathing room with its warm moist air and sent of clenasing lotions."
    Page 29
it's imagery because you can smell the lotions and i can picture the moist air and how it covers the mirrors in my house.

  11. On page 1 the author uses imagery to show us what the jet looks like. Squinting toward the sky, he had seen a sleek jet, almost a blur at its high speed, go past, and a second later heard the blast of sound that followed.

  12. The literary device I found was on page 5 chapter 1 when Lily tells the family unit that the boy she incountered acted like an animal.
This sentence is a simile because it compares the boy to an animal using the word "like". This simile helped me better understand how he was acting because I know animals are jumpy, silly and obnoxious. So this means that is how he was acting. The message this sent me was that she was very angy with him.
